Dzūkija is a unique ethnographic region of Lithuania located between the Middle Nemunas and Neris rivers. The Dzūkai, inhabitants of this region, are Lithuania's southerners, distinctive not only in their charming dialect, but also in their original customs, folk songs, and way of life.
The territory of the forest Dzūkai in the southernmost part of the country includes the villages of Kapiniškės, Kašėtos, Marcinkonys, Margionys, Musteika, Puvočiai, Zervynos, Žiūrai. It is here that the “action” of this book takes place: people engaged in their everyday work, resting, celebrating, performing their rituals, telling their stories. The reality captured in these photographs is quickly disappearing as these enlightened people follow one another into eternity. They merit our recognition, albeit in passing...

A book dedicated to the Jewish community resident in Lithuania for over six hundred years. Written by scholars in Lithuania, Byelorussia, Israel, Poland, France and Russia researching the history and culture of Lithuanian Jews.
The publication discusses the less popularised and sometimes originally interpreted manifestations of a Jewish past, and reconstructs a picture of Jewish history. The reader is introduced to the community structure, religious traditions, and specific features of daily life. Included is an important chapter about religious, political, and cultural movements, and an extensive presentation on the broad-based economic activities of the Jews, including the little-known history of Degsnė, a village of Jewish farmers. Also presented is a study of the formation of proper names, various traditions, the development of literature, music, theatre, art, and science.
This book is of value to all those interested in acquiring a deeper knowledge of the history, traditions, culture, and contributions to Lithuania and the world of the Jews of Lithuania. Includes a list of references, and indexes of proper names, place names and items (with definitions). Illustrated and with a map of the ethnic composition of Lithuanian cities and towns at the end of the 19th century.

A memorial album dedicated to the annihilated Jewish communities of Lithuania. Photographs that capture the images of cemeteries, prayer houses, and other buildings and sites connected to Jewish life, or more precisely –
images of what remains many years after the golden age of Jewish Lithuania. Alongside them are the Yiddish and Lithuanian names of towns and villages whose Jewish inhabitants made up a large proportion, perhaps even the majority of the overall population from the 19th and the first half of the 20th century – accompanied by a number of telling figures from their history. This book not only evokes the sadness and pain of loss, it reminds us of the people who drew their sap of life from Lithuania, who created and fostered their unique culture, who simply lived, in this land. We hear the din of the eternal silence that shrouds Jewish Lithuania.

An album-monograph dedicated to Kazimieras Žoromskis (1913-2004), an artist who created unique paintings in an Op impressionistic style. His works appeared alongside paintings by Marc Chagall, Karl Appel, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Willem de Kooning and other famous 20th century artists in exhibitions in Madrid, Washington, New York and Paris. Žoromskis' paintings can be found in museums in Europe and America, his biography and works appear in international art reference books, and his achievements have merited distinguished Lithuanian and USA awards.
This book, the first detailed presentation of this original artist to the public, includes a list of reproductions, index of titles, and bibliography.
